Enneagrams of Cities & Placemaking

By Ryan Short

October 6, 2020

At CivicBrand, our agency was founded on the famous Jane Jacobs quote stating, “Cities have the capabilities of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” That means we need everyone, all Enneagram types, to bring their unique personalities and skills to help shape our communities and make proud places!

Right now, it seems as though everyone is obsessing over their Enneagram, a description of nine different personality types. It’s a topic of daily discussion amongst the CivicBrand team so we’ve put together a list of the Enneagram Types in Cities and Placemaking – each type’s perfect job in the city, each type’s biggest concern, what makes each type happy, and where each type is likely to be found in town.

Do you know your Enneagram Type? If you don’t know yours, take a quiz here!  Your type may be spot on or you may disagree, but it’s all in good fun!

Type 1

I’m the poster child for the Type 1 Enneagram so this one is personal for me. The type 1 loves everything to be neat and organized and in its right place. We also have a strong sense of right and wrong and don’t understand when other people aren’t as driven by that (like our boycott of Amazon!)

Type 2

These are the helpers. They love checking in with everybody. They often know everyone in the community and make sure they are all doing well.

Type 3

The type threes are often great leaders and are status and accomplishment driven. They love to be at the hot new spot in town.

Type 4

These are your more introspective and artsy types. They have a passion for culture and keeping your community unique and culturally rich.

Type 5

These are your quiet types but the ones who dive in and get a ton done behind the scenes (trust me I’m married to a Type 5).

Type 6

Type sixes are loyal and love to stick to traditions. They can also be worriers which can be good because they are always thinking of what could go wrong in order to keep us all safe.

Type 7

These are the fun and always up for anything people. You’ll often find them planning fun events and always coming up with new ideas. They bring great energy to any community.

Type 8

Type eights are driven and focused on their goals. They make great city managers because they can set their mind to a task and do whatever it takes to get it done.

Type 9

These are your peacemakers. They often see the good in everyone and can see both sides of debates. In these divisive times, it’s always good to have some nines.

So what do you think? Does yours sound like you? Do you already have that city job for your Enneagram or does it make you want to apply?

Regardless of your Enneagram type, your community needs you and your unique personality and skill set. Get involved, make your voice heard, and help make your town a proud place!
